The US wanted to prosecute Meng on allegations of fraud and alleged allegations of lying to American banks for alleged violation of sanctions against Iran. However the lawyers of the officer have dismissed these allegations. The copy of the letter sent to Canada's Justice Minister David Lemetti has not been made public.

However, according to the press release issued here, Meng's lawyers have urged the withdrawal of extradition proceedings from Lemetti as they have no say in the American request. Lawyers have said that abolishing the proceedings is in Canada's national interest. Meng's lawyers argue that the matter is probably political and is extraordinary in terms of legal aspects and foreign policy.
